Ozogoche Lake Tour

Departure: Every day

At roughly 55 km of Guamote, taking winding roads through amazing paramo landscape, you find the authentic Indigenous community of Ozogoche. The community is surrounded by a cluster of 45 beautiful lakes. During the trip you will get an impression of the daily life of the people in the mountains. At 3400m asl. You will get astonishing views of a unique part of Ecuador that is still a piece of pristine untouched nature. This is the place where you can see big herds of lamas and alpacas and look over multiple mountains in a glance!

A local guide will take you on a walk showing you the astounding surroundings, explaining you about the local traditions, and legends and mysteries that surround the lakes, such as the curious phenomenon of the suiciding birds which no one ever was able to explain. Every year in September hundreds of migratory birds plunge deep in the icy waters of the lakes and kill themselves. You will take adventurous trails, crossing freshwater rivers and passing huge rocks. Brave people can even take a swim in the lake.

You will pay a quick visit the community of Ozogoche where the children of the local school are always happy to see us. A local foundation started some projects at the school, together with the children and the teachers (painting the school, donating pigs, a schooltrip and much more).

After the walk there will be a traditional trout lunch ready for us to enjoy. Late in the afternoon you will be brought back to Guamote, through the mountains, enjoying some more beautiful scenery.
