Duivelsneus treinexcursie

Departures: 08:00 AM and 11:00 AM – From Tuesday to Sunday and holidays
Duration: 2,5 hours

The biggest complication faced by the construction of the Trans-Andean railroad was the Devil’s Nose, a mountain with almost perpendicular walls. To overcome this obstacle a zigzag railroad was built that climbs more than 500 meters (1,645 ft) in less than 12 km (approx. 7 miles) with steep ascents and descents. It today remains an impressive piece of engineering. While recovering from the mind-blowing descent you will enjoy the views of the narrow gorge of river Chanchán and will have the chance to learn a bit about the traditions and worldview of the Puruhuas in Sibambe.

As it is not possible anymore to ride the train on the roof of the train, you will board one of the train’s carriages in Alausí. The huge Chanchan canyon is the starting point from which the train descends to the Pacific Coast. Through a zigzag, dug in almost perpendicular walls on the famous Devil’s Nose, you will descend from 2347 meters (7,700 ft) to 1836 meters (6,023 ft) within minutes. You will make a panoramic stop at Nariz del Diablo’s viewpoint for photographs before arriving at Sibambe train station. Here you will be welcomed with a folk dance presentation and you will have the time to visit a small interpretation center with a historical overview of this impressive construction. Afterwards you will return to Alausí.
