Bellavista Cloud Forest

Departure: Every day (shared tour)

The Bellavista Reserve is located at the southern edge of the Chocó region, an extended area, reaching from Panamá to Peru, famous for its great biodiversity and endemicity within, probably due to the Andes isolating flora & fauna. Discover botanical treasures such as bromeliads and orchids, that are in bloom year round and enjoy the presence of over 330 recorded species of birds in this area. Bellavista’s cloud forest will amaze you.

From Quito you head North-West towards the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, where you will arrive after about 2 hours. Upon arrival the hummingbirds will take your full attention. Large numbers hover constantly round the feeders, and it is easy to identify six to eight species at very close range. They sometimes will even perch on your finger. After breakfast you will go for a guided naturalist hike into the forest for about 2-2,5 hours. Your will pass by exuberant vegetation of the cloud forest, its bird life, and observe the fascinating adaptations to life in this special environment. Every hike reveals something new even for those who are fortunate enough to live in the forest every day! After your hike, lunch is served at a restaurant with breathtaking views and a flurry of hummingbirds all around you. After lunch, you have the option to relax and watch the hummers and other colorful species near the dome, or take yourself on another (unguided) hike into the forest. The trails are well marked and safe so you will be able to find your way back easily. Your driver will wait for you at 3:00 PM to bring you back to Quito, where you will arrive in the late afternoon.

The climate in the Bellavista Cloud Forest is humid. In the morning it can be warm and sunny, afternoons can be marked with rain and followed with a temperature drop. It is recommended to use large trousers and socks and use mosquito repellent.
