Otavalo, famous for its indigenous market, a place full of traditions and the country’s best place to do some serious souvenir shopping. The market on Plaza Poncho can be visited any day, although on Wednesday it is a bit bigger and on Saturdays at its maximum, not only covering Plaza Poncho but a big part of the town. But the region has more to offer! Imbabura province is known as the province of the lakes, San Pablo lake is located at the foot of Taita Imbabura (4.621 m) and crater lake Cuicocha can be found next to Mama Cotacachi (4.939 m). These volcanoes are starring in a famous and very interesting legend.

From Quito you head North to the Imbabura province. On the way, you will make a stop in Cayambe for a visit to the solor clock on the equator. Afterwards you will go to a nearby local restaurant to see how the typical cookies bizcochos are being made and for an optional breakfast. Before arriving to Otavalo you will make another (photo) stop at the stunning San Pablo lake. In Otavalo you will have about an hour time to walk around the colorful market where all kinds of handicrafts (shawls, pottery, clothing, jewelry) are being sold. The journey continues with a visit to the Cuicocha crater lake, located at the foot of Cotacachi volcano in the Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve. After a short hike of about 15 minutes and taking some photos, it is time for the last activity of the day. You will pay a short visit to Cotacachi, a small town that is well known for its leather products. Here you will have lunch before heading back to Quito.
